Göcek, Turkey: things to do and practical tips

This post is also available in: Português

Living in the UK, we often look for somewhere warm when planning a holiday. For this trip, we chose Turkey’s southwestern coast, splitting our time between four nights in Kaş and four nights in Göcek.

Göcek gave us time to explore the islands by boat and spend our evenings walking along the waterfront. Here’s what we enjoyed, where we stayed and the practical details worth considering before visiting.

Göcek

Is Göcek worth visiting?

For me, Göcek is worth visiting for the boat trips, swimming and relaxed evenings by the marina. It suited the slower part of our holiday, without needing a packed sightseeing itinerary.

We visited in the second half of June, during Kurban Bayramı, a major national holiday. Other places on our trip were particularly crowded, but Göcek felt noticeably quieter. That was our experience during this visit, rather than a guarantee that it will always be peaceful.

If you’re short on time, I would choose Kaş instead, especially for the boat trip to the sunken city of Kekova. You can read more in my Kaş travel guide and Kekova boat tour article.

Göcek tourism

Where is Göcek?

Göcek is a small harbour town in the Fethiye district of Muğla Province, in southwestern Turkey. Its sheltered bay and marinas make it a popular base for sailing and boat trips.

Dalaman is the nearest airport, while Fethiye lies further along the coast. This makes Göcek a convenient stop if you’re exploring the region by car.

The centre is easy to explore on foot, with restaurants, cafés and shops around the waterfront. I spent every evening walking along the promenade and watching the sunset.

Things to do in Göcek

Take a boat trip around the islands

A boat trip was one of the highlights of our stay. We spent the day swimming in clear water, relaxing in the coves and enjoying the scenery around the bay.

You can join an organised trip or hire a private boat. The area includes Göcek Island and the Yassıca Islands, with different routes available from the harbour.

Before booking, check the itinerary, the number of passengers and what is included. If swimming is your priority, ask how many swimming stops the trip makes rather than choosing solely by the number of islands advertised.

Walk along the waterfront

Walking along the promenade became part of our evening routine. There are places to stop for a drink or dinner, browse the shops and watch the boats in the marina. It’s an easy way to enjoy Göcek without planning an activity, particularly towards sunset.

How to get to Göcek

Find the canal bridge near D-Marin

If you’ve seen photographs of Göcek’s stone canal bridge (image bellow), you can find it near D-Marin. Use this map of the canal bridge to locate it during your walk around the waterfront.

Browse the local market

Göcek’s weekly market is another option if you enjoy browsing food stalls and local products. You’ll find fresh produce alongside other goods, and it offers a different setting from the marina shops.

Explore beyond Göcek

If you have a car, you can use Göcek as a base for exploring other parts of the coast.

Fethiye is an option for its markets and rock-cut tombs. Dalyan and the ancient city of Kaunos are further afield and work better as a separate outing than as a quick stop in town.

Kaunos is on UNESCO’s Tentative List, rather than the inscribed World Heritage List.

Beaches near Göcek

For beach days, it helps to distinguish between options close to Göcek and those further towards Fethiye. Hotel beaches also have different access arrangements from public beaches.

Around Göcek

  • D-Resort Göcek: The hotel has a private beach. If you’re not staying there, contact the hotel to confirm whether day access is available and what it includes. See the official D-Resort beach information.
  • İnlice Beach: An option outside the town centre. Some services on the Fethiye–Göcek bus route serve İnlice Beach; check the specific departure and stops before travelling.
  • Katrancı Bay: A bay surrounded by pine trees on the coast between Göcek and Fethiye. It’s an option for a beach outing away from the marina.

Further towards Fethiye

  • Günlüklü Bay: Another bay to consider when exploring the coast towards Fethiye. Check current access arrangements before setting out.
  • Çalış Beach: An option to combine with a visit to Fethiye, rather than treating it as a beach in Göcek.
  • Kalemya Bay: Home to Hillside Beach Club. If you’re considering visiting without staying at the resort, contact it directly rather than assuming you can pay for access on arrival. See the Hillside Beach Club beach information.

Where to stay in Göcek

We stayed at Renka Hotel & Spa and were very happy with the service and facilities.

When choosing accommodation, I’d consider how close you want to be to the waterfront and whether you’ll have a car. Staying within walking distance of the centre makes evenings simpler if you want to walk to restaurants. For a summer visit, I would book ahead to have more choice, particularly if you have a specific hotel in mind.

Göcek in Turkey

What to eat in Göcek

Food is a big part of our trips, and Göcek had plenty of options for dinner. The waterfront was a pleasant setting in the evening, particularly around sunset. A few Turkish dishes to look out for include:

  • Meze: Small dishes to share, such as haydari, a yoghurt-based dip, and deniz börülcesi, samphire usually dressed with olive oil and garlic.
  • Fish: You may see levrek (sea bass) and çipura (sea bream) on restaurant menus.
  • Çöp şiş: Small grilled meat skewers, often served with bread and vegetables.
  • Pide: A boat-shaped flatbread with toppings such as minced meat, cheese or spinach.

Practical tips from our visit

We had a couple of situations where the prices charged differed from those on the menu. On another occasion, we were shortchanged when paying cash.

These experiences were frustrating, so I recommend checking the bill against the menu and counting your change before leaving. Paying by card can make it easier to keep a record, but it’s still worth checking the amount before approving the payment.

For boat trips and beach visits, confirm what is included before booking. This is particularly useful when comparing different trips or arranging access to a hotel beach.

Göcek Town, Turkey

How to get to Göcek

Dalaman International Airport (DLM) is the nearest airport and the most convenient starting point for Göcek.

From the airport, arrange a transfer, take a taxi or collect a rental car. Check the journey time to your accommodation when booking, as it will depend on its location and traffic.

Göcek does not have a railway station. For the final part of the journey, plan to arrive by road rather than by train.

From Fethiye, the 3-50 bus route serves Göcek. Check the official MUTTAŞ timetable for current departures and stops before travelling.

From Dalaman Airport, follow the route towards Göcek via the D400.

We hired a car for the flexibility to explore the coast.

I usually compare rental options through Discover Cars, which brings together providers in one place and makes it easier to find a car that suits the trip and budget.

If you’re staying in the centre and mainly planning boat trips and waterfront evenings, you may not need a car throughout your stay. It becomes more useful for exploring beaches and places outside Göcek, such as Fethiye and Dalyan.

Final thoughts

I enjoyed Göcek, especially the boat trip, but I’d choose Kaş if I only had time for one. If you’re deciding between them, read my Kaş travel guide.
